Ukraine’s food exports in numbers

A Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian port of Odessa on Saturday sparked immediate outrage in Kyiv and countries around the world.

Governments and observers said the attack casts doubt on a landmark deal that aimed to facilitate agricultural exports from key Black Sea ports like Odessa. In particular, the UN-brokered deal – signed by Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, Turkey on Friday – was expected to allow vital wheat and grain exports to resume, a move its supporters say will help alleviate the global food crisis.

“These products are desperately needed to address the global food crisis and alleviate the suffering of millions of needy people around the world,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement condemning “unequivocally “The Russian strike.

Often called the breadbasket of Europe, Ukraine has around 42 million hectares of agricultural land and is home to vast amounts of black “chernozem” soil, which is very fertile.

In 2021, Ukraine’s agricultural exports totaled more than $27 billion, or 41% of the country’s total exports, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

More specifically, the country is a major producer and exporter of staple grains, products vital to the international food system. In fact, the World Food Programme, which is the humanitarian food aid agency of the United Nations, gets 40%. 100 of its wheat from Ukraine.
