Travel formalities to be completed due to the Covid-19 pandemic to attend the FIFA World Cup

FIFA World Cup has been a commercial success so far: 17 million ticket requests have been received during the first phase of official ticket sales alone. This amount of potential visitors seems huge but will not be definitive, as members of the media and the national teams themselves must also be taken into account.

The host country has a very difficult mission to accomplish: to allow football fans to enjoy the unique experience of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, but also to guarantee the conditions so as not to threaten the health of visitors and local citizens. Depending on the country of origin, green, red or high risk, there are several formalities to be completed in order to travel and obtain authorization to attend Qatar 2022. The first step is to recognize in which category your country falls.

Qatar Green List Countries

Visitors from these lands are considered the least dangerous. Thus, the formalities to be completed to attend the next FIFA World Cup are less compared to the members of the other lists. There are 117 countries included in this category. Here are a few.

Qatar Red List Countries

As the color indicates, the level of risk increases with visitors from these countries, for the Qatari authorities. The measure, therefore, is to demand more Anti-Covid protocols to ensure that the virus will not spread in their country. The list is made up of 86 countries so far.

Qatar High Risk Country List

The toughest measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 are taken with visitors coming from lands in this category. There is even a scenario that could lead to a ban on entering the host country of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Luckily, there are only 6 members on this list so far: Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Nepal, Pakistan and the Philippines.

Vaccines approved and conditionally approved to attend the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

Proving that you are fully vaccinated is an important step in traveling and entering the next host country of the FIFA World Cup. As there are several vaccines used around the world to reduce the risk of complications from Covid-19 infection, the Ministry of Public Health in Qatar has divided them into two categories: approved and conditionally approved.

Approved vaccines: Pfizer / BioNTech (Comirnaty) – Two doses; Moderna (SpikeVax) – Two doses; AstraZeneca (Covishield / Oxford / Vaxzevria) – Two doses; Jansen / Johnson & Johnson (single dose).

Vaccines approved under conditions: Sinopharm Vaccine – Two doses; Sinovac – Two doses; Sputnik V – Two doses; Covaxin – Two doses.

People with the latter type of vaccines must complete the following formalities to be considered fully immunized: provide a serological antibody test with a positive result before traveling to Qatar. This test should be done at least 14 days after receiving the second dose.

Additionally, visitors who received two doses of conditionally approved vaccines and then an additional dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines will reach the fully immunized vaccine category 14 days after receiving the booster.

In any case, anyone who has been vaccinated outside Qatar must provide an original vaccination certificate in English or Arabic with the following characteristics: identical name on both the certificate and the passport, dates of doses, type of vaccine and serial number of the vaccine lot.

Chronology of health formalities to be observed to attend the Qatar 2022 World Cup

Depending on which list includes the country of origin, here are the steps for (foreign) visitors to travel and receive entry clearance to attend the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. are divided into two: before and after arrival. in Qatar.

The journey begins with an online application for a travel permit in the Qatari Covid-19 tracking system called Ehteraz. There, the prospective World Cup participant must upload a vaccination certificate among other documents. It is strongly recommended to complete this formality 5 days before traveling to Qatar.

Then, 24 hours before flying to the country of the FIFA World Cup in the Middle East, the visitor must: receive an approval “Pre-registration request to enter the State of Qatar”. A copy of it should be printed and kept close at hand; download the Ehteraz mobile application (but do not activate it).

In addition to the procedures described below, upon arrival in Qatar, you must complete the corresponding immigration procedures, receive the identification stamp in your passport and activate the Ehteraz application on a mobile phone with a local SIM card or international.

Before arriving in Qatar (fully vaccinated people)

-Green and Red List Countries/Approved Vaccines: Take a PCR test with a negative result within 72 hours of arrival in Qatar (all age groups).

– Green and Red List Countries/Conditionally Approved Vaccines: Take a serological antibody test before arriving in Qatar. If the visitor is unable to complete this formality, a seven-day hotel quarantine will be required.

– Countries listed as high risk: take a PCR test with a negative result within 72 hours of your arrival in Qatar (all age groups). Unvaccinated travelers will not be allowed to enter Qatar.

After arrival in Qatar (fully vaccinated persons)

-Green list countries/all types of vaccines: nothing else is required.

– Red list and high risk countries/all types of vaccines: a two-day quarantine will be required. On day 2, a rapid antigen test should be performed. In case of negative results, the person will be released immediately.
