The country’s first digital population and housing census project has been reduced by Tk186.11C

For the first time in its history, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) is going to launch the Population and Household Census 2022 project in a digital system or the Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) method.

In addition, the latest Geographic Information System (GIS) method will be used in this census for the very first time.

Meanwhile, 3.95 lakh tabs were procured for all these modern systems but in the end the cost fell to Tk 186.11 crore more than the main estimated cost.

The estimated cost of the project was Tk 1761.79 crore but now the revised cost is Tk 1575.86 crore.

President of Bangladesh Abdul Hamid is expected to unveil the commemorative stamp while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will deliver a speech in this regard.

The BBS will start carrying out the population and housing census on June 15, which will end on July 21.

In his keynote address, Md Dildar Hossain, Project Manager, Population and Housing Census, BBS said, “This sixth BBS survey will last for one week and will be conducted in digital format. About 3.7 lakh numerators will collect the data nationwide.

The guest of honor of the program MA Mannan, Minister of Planning declared: “The most important thing for the BBS is to carry out this census with the greatest integrity. It is therefore important to be precise. Also, this time around, it’s done digitally. I think it will be more reliable.

The special guest, Prof. Shamsul Alam, Minister of State for Planning, said in his speech that, “Various data is needed for various development works of the government. The BBS continues to play an important role in regularly providing this data.

Meanwhile, he hinted that he would make a reduction in the next census.

“Based on this data, we want to calculate this census every five years, like in a developed country, not in 10 years,” he added.

After independence, the first census was conducted in 1974. The second census was conducted in 1981. The country’s third, fourth and fifth censuses and household censuses were conducted in 1991, 2001 and 2011 respectively after a period of ten years.

Although due to the Covid-19 epidemic, it was not possible to carry out the sixth census and the household census in 2021 after a period of 10 years like many other countries in the world, the census main will take place June 15-21, later this year.
