The threat is spreading across the country. Overcrowded areas and places where foreign nationals are known to congregate may be at greater risk of attack. There is a risk that future attacks will also target public gatherings, including religious gatherings and political rallies. You should minimize your exposure to these areas, carefully examine your movements, and follow specific advice from local security authorities.
There have been several IED attacks targeting police and security forces in Dhaka, Khulna, Chittagong and Sylhet. Bangladeshi authorities continue to disrupt planned attacks and have made a number of arrests. Some operations against suspected militants have also resulted in deaths. The Bangladeshi authorities remain on high alert. Increases in the presence of security forces and restrictions on movement may be put in place in the short term. You should remain vigilant, especially in and around police buildings and other places with a police or security presence, and follow the advice of local authorities.
Since September 2015, Daesh (formerly known as ISIL) has claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks in Bangladesh. There have been sporadic attacks against religious minority communities and security forces, including attacks using suicide bombers. On July 1, 2016, ISIL claimed responsibility for an attack on Holey artisan bakery in Gulshan 2 district of Dhaka, which resulted in the deaths of 20 hostages, mostly foreign nationals, and 2 police officers. There have been recent media reports suggesting continued interest by Daesh in attacking targets in Bangladesh.
Groups affiliated with Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) have also claimed responsibility for the murder of a number of people they consider to have anti-Islamic views and lifestyles. Online activists, including secular bloggers and members of the LGBT community, have been targeted.
There is an increased threat of terrorist attacks globally against British interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You must be vigilant at this time.
