The Ministry of Finance has increased travel allowances for government employees to Tk 18 per km from Tk 3.75 per km by road, according to a Finance Division circular issued on Sunday.
In addition, civil servants of grade 5 and above will receive a travel allowance of Tk 30 per kilometer for domestic air connections. For air travel, they received 20% of the airfare.
The Finance Division has also reassessed per diems and transfer allowances for civil servants.
According to the circular, civil servants in the 5th year at most will be in category 1, from the 6th to the 10th year in category 2, from the 11th to the 16th year in category 3 and from the 17th to the 20th year in category 4.
Category 1 civil servants will receive Tk 18 per kilometer for travel by road, rail and waterways, Category 2 employees will receive Tk 15 per km and Category 3 and 4 employees will receive Tk 8 per km.
For air travel, category 1 civil servants will receive an allowance of Tk 30 per kilometer, category 2 employees Tk 12 per kilometer and category 3 and 4 employees Tk 6 per kilometer.
Explaining the travel allowance, the government notification states that if an employee travels to Saidpur from Dhaka and then to Rangpur by road, he will get a flight ticket estimating the distance between Dhaka and Rangpur.
For travel by road, civil servants in category 1 received an allowance of 3.75 Tk per kilometer, civil servants in category 2 3.00 Tk per kilometer, employees in category 3 2.25 Tk per kilometer and Category 4 employees Tk 1.50 per kilometer.
In addition, category 1 officials for train travel would receive a travel allowance 1.5 times the air-conditioned class fare and other categories would get 1.8 times the fare. For inland waterways, the compensation was the same as water transport tariffs.
The Ministry of Finance has also increased the travel allowance for the families of civil servants on transfer.
Until now, category 1 civil servants received a travel allowance of Tk 2,300 per kg of goods when traveling with family, which has now been increased to Tk 3,000.
From now on, they will receive an allowance of 50 Tk per kilometer. There was no allowance per kilometer in this category, but the officials used to get Tk 2,250 as the cost of packing the goods.
Category 2 civil servants previously received Tk 1,200 per kg of goods for family travel and Tk 1,500 as packing costs. They will receive an allowance of 45 Tk per kilometer as well as a fixed fee of 2,500 Tk.
Category 3 employees previously received Tk 700 per kg allowance and Tk 750 packing cost when traveling with family. From now on, they will receive an allowance of 20 Tk per kilometer as well as a fixed amount of 2,000 Tk.
Employees in Category 4 previously received a flat packing fee of Tk 300 and 400 per kg. They will now receive an allowance of 8 Tk per kilometer as well as the fixed travel expenses of 600 Tk.
