Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque today urged the country’s people to gradually change their eating habits and eat other nutritious foods and fruits, thereby reducing the consumption of rice.
âPer capita rice consumption in Bangladesh is 400 grams per day, which is the highest in the world. In many countries, the average consumption of rice is 200 grams per day, âhe said.
The Minister made the remarks as he spoke as the main guest at a reception titled “50 Years of Bangladesh: Achievements and Diversifications in Agriculture”.
The Bangladesh Agricultural Journalists Forum (BAJF) and the Bangladeshi daily Bonik Barta jointly hosted the program at a hotel in Dhaka marking 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence.
Dr Md Shajahan Kabir, CEO of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institution (BRRI), presented the main paper on âThe transformation of rice-based agriculture in Bangladesh: the link between research and policyâ.
He mentioned in the presentation that so far around 137 varieties of rice have been developed by BRRI, which has helped the country to become self-sufficient in food production.
He also said that one taka invested in agricultural research yields 51 times more.
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Bangladesh Representative Robert D Simpson and USAID Mission Director Kathryn David Steven also spoke at the ceremony as special guests.
BAJF president Iftekhar Mahmud chaired the function while Bonik Barta’s editor-in-chief Dewan Hanif Mahmud moderated it.
