Anwar Hossain was a Bangladeshi business icon

Anwar Hossain, founding chairman of business conglomerate Anwar Group of Industries, has passed away, leaving behind his legacy in the country.

He was among the first generation of industrialists who helped create business opportunities, promote entrepreneurship and achieve higher national growth. He became a commercial icon for posterity.

Mr. Anwar Hossain, also a former MP for Lalbagh region in Dhaka, died of complications of old age at the city’s Labaid Hospital on August 17 (Tuesday). He was 83 years old.

His namaj-e-janaza will take place at Baitul Aman Jam-e-Masjid on Route 7 in Dhanmondi at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to information provided by Anwar Group.

Mr. Anwar Hossain has gained great fame among commoners for his Mala Sharee brand. In 1968 he founded the Anwar Silk unit to produce and market Mala Sharee, a household name in the following decades.

Founding Chairman of Anwar Group of Industries, also served as Founding Chairman of The City Bank Limited, Bangladesh Finance and Investment Company Ltd, and Founding Director of City General Insurance Company Limited.

A long-time chairman of the DCCI Foundation, he was a trustee of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in 1976-78, 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1989-90.
